Red Grouse

Red Grouse can be found in some numbers on the Ladder Hills as well as other moorlands on Glenlivet Estate.

These moors are managed for Red Grouse by "Muirburn". In the early spring and late autumn, small patches of moorland are burnt to remove old, woody heather. This stimulates the regrowth of young heather shoots, which are the preferred diet of Red Grouse. It takes up to 15 years to burn the whole moor, giving a patchwork effect that allows the Grouse close access to both food, and longer heather for cover and nesting.
