Autumn GoldSelected as a special moorland management interpretation site for the Cairngorms National Park, Blairfindy is an ideal place to explore a working moor.
Roe Deer often venture from surrounding woodland onto the lower slopes of the moor where they search for juicy young shoots of heather as they browse amongst blaeberry and cranberry. Fieldfare and Redwing - refugees from the artic at the end of the year - may be seen clearing succulent red berries from rowan trees. Red Grouse are never far away and we may even spot the rare Black Grouse that also live here.
On higher ground we enter the territory of the Mountain Hare. During the autumn these hardy animals don thick white coats in preparation for winter and can be seen easily from some distance. Finally we reach the top of Cairn Liath with its magnificent view across lower Glenlivet and Strathavon to Ben Rinnes. At this time of year the colours are magnificent - the reds of Gean contrasting with golden Birch and yellow Larch.
Join us on an autumn afternoon stroll on this traditional working moor and discover its rich variety of wildlife. |
