Black Grouse

Glenlivet has a good population of this endangered species. They are found on moors, high pastures and forest edges. Mainly vegetarian feeding on heather shoots and other moorland plants. Breeding displays at traditional lek sites during the spring.

Capercaillie

(Tetrao urogallus)Capercaillie

The largest member of the grouse family, this endangered species may be found in mature pine forests on the Glenlivet Estate. Mainly vegetarian it usually feeds on needles, buds and small cones from Scots Pine. Males gather at dawn in the spring to lek.

Red Grouse

Relatively common throughout Glenlivet in moorland areas. Feeds on heather shoots and other moorland plants. In the spring eggs are laid in a hollow scraped out by the female amongst thick heather.

Ptarmigan

An occasional visitor to the high moorland of the Ladder and Cromdale hills as a refuge from the high tops of the central Cairngorms in severe winter weather.

Red Legged Partridge

Found on open pastures or woodland on lower ground. Feeds on a wide variety of plants and some insects. The male makes several shallow scrapes on the ground in the spring and the female selects one in which to lay her eggs.

Pheasant

(Phasianus colchicus)Pheasant

Found throughout Glenlivet near woodland on lower ground. Feeds on plant seeds such as poppy, fat hen, hemp nettle and dock as well as insects. Nests on the ground in dense cover.

Grey Partridge

(Perdix perdix)

Found near farms where there is sufficient cover for nesting. Feeds on leaves of knotgrass and chickweed as well as insects. Nests in a shallow scrape lined with grass and leaves.
